Title: A New Image Coding Algorithm Based on Adaptive Wavelet Transform
Abstract: In order to improve the compression efficiency of texture-rich images, a new image coding algorithm based on adaptive wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. First, adaptive wavelet transform is applied to texture-rich image. Second, the order for scanning wavelet coefficients is identified based on the image content. Finally, the DPCM is used to code the wavelet coefficients in the lowest frequency subband, the vector quantization is used to code the wavelet coefficients in the other high frequency subbands, and the outputs are supplied to adaptive arithmetic coder. The experiment results show that this new wavelet coder is competitive to, and open outperforms the best wavelet coding algorithm (such as SPIHT), especially for the textured images.
