Title: “‘Suo(所)’ Is the Object of ‘Yi(以)’” Questioned
Abstract: It is widely accepted in academic circle that ‘Suo(所)' is the Object of ‘Yi(以) in Suoyi(所以)+VP construction, and some scholars even hold that suoy(i所以) is a preposition+object construction and is the manner adverbial of VP.With investigation, this paper states that in this construction, the object of yi(以)is not suo(所) before itself, but zhi(之) in the construction of ‘yi(以)'+(zhi(之))+VP.This phrase is made by the addition of the marker suo(所).In order to avoid repetition or because the reference of zhi(之) is known to all, zhi(之) is thus hidden. The construction of suoyi(zhi) VP is nouny in nature and so is suoyi, and suoyi is not a preposition +object construction, but is formed by crossing syntactic layers.
