Title: Comparison of diagnostic value of capsule endoscopy versus double balloon endoscopy for unexplained abdominal pain
Abstract: Objective To compare and evaluate the diagnostic value and the safety of capsule endoscopy versus double-balloon endoscopy for patients with unexplained abdominal pain. Methods From May 2006 to June 2006,205 cases of unknown abdominal pain examined by gastroscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal CT and gastrointestinal barium meal X-ray were collected.Of 205 cases,92 cases received capsule endoscopy examination, and 113 cases received the double balloon endoscopy,of which 10 cases received both of the examinations. Results The detection rate for small intestine lesions was 73.91%(68/92) by capsule endoscopy and 60.18%(68/113) by double-balloon endoscopy. Most lesions were found to be nonspecific inflammation of small intestine in both groups. The detection rate in cases undergoing both the examinations was 80%(8/10).Conclusion Capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy have high diagnostic value in patients with unexplained abdominal pain. The two methods can be combined to increase the detection rate. The capsule endoscopy examination is more convenient, safe, economic and efficient, and can be used as the first choice for diagnosing the unexplained abdominal pain.
