Title: Public Diplomacy: Definition, formative conditions and its functions
Abstract: In recent years, public diplomacy has gradually drawn people's attention. This essay reviews different definitions of public diplomacy used in foreign academic circles, with a focus on analysis of its nature, origin and development, and functions. By introducing the reform of public diplomacy in western countries, it puts forward suggestions on China's public diplomacy. This essay argues that the development of public diplomacy is the logical result of such new developments in contemporary international relations as the increase in international participants and the complicating affects of international competition. public diplomacy is a reflection of the political development, progress of diplomatic mechanisms, and innovation in diplomatic practices. The development and further improvement of public diplomacy will help eliminate the so-called China Threat and promote China's international reputation.
