Title: A comparison between nabumetone and nimesulide on efficacy and safety in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
Abstract: AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of nabumetone with that of nimesulide in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Sixty two active RA patients were divided into two groups: thirty patients of nabumetone group were treated with nabumetone 500 mg, po bid×4 wk; thirty two patients of nimesulide group were treated with nimesulide 100 mg, po bid×4 wk. Clinical and laboratory parameters were observed pre and post treatment. RESULTS: The total effective rate of nabumetone and nimesulide group for RA was 87% and 83% ( P 0.05), respectively. The adverse reactions related to nabumetone were nausea, heartburn, acid reflux and drowsiness. The incidence of each clinical adverse reaction was similar among the treatment groups. The adverse reaction rate was 13% in nabumetone group, while 19% in nimesulide group( P 0.05). CONCLUSION: Nabumetone is effective and safe in treating RA, showing comparable clinical efficacy and incidence of adverse reaction to that of nimesulide.
