Title: Analysis of the effect on serum CO_2 partial pressure by sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and their mixture
Abstract: Objective To study the effect on serum CO 2 partial pressure(PCO 2) in vitro by sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and their mixture. Methods Ten heparinized blood samples were treated with sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, their mixture and sodium chloride before and after acidification, then the pH and the PCO 2 were measured. Results The pH of blood in vitro would decreased after addition of hydrochloric acid, but PCO 2 increased. After addition of sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and their mixture, the pH and PCO 2 reached a new balance immediately. Conclusions In vitro the whole blood specimens acidificated, the mixture of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate has potentially superior effects when compares with sodium bicarbonate.
