Title: Returning to Original Work: Imperative and Necessity of Academic Criticism——The Truth of An Academic Discussion Initiated by SHUI JING ZHU
Abstract: Li Daoyuan's(郦道元)SHUI JING ZHU(《水经注》)has not only a wealth of data, but also a rigorous scientific approach. The author would rather leave a question for future consideration than draw a forced analogy. The account of Wan Cheng(萬城) in the book was a typical case of his writing attitude in the book. It leaves margin for thorough textual research. The scholars in Ming Dynasty, such as Yang Shen(杨慎),Chen Yaowen(陈耀文),Wang Shizhen(王世贞),Hu Yinglin(胡应麟) and Zhou Ying(周婴) as well as present scholar Mr.Lin Qingzhang(林庆彰) all joined in the discussion about Wan Cheng. Some of the comments are right while it is due to the failure to check against the original of SHUI JING ZHU that others resulted in some faulty conclusions. It has been proved that a correct understanding of the objective matters is a prerequisite to a proper academic research and criticism. No matter how complicated it may be, returning to original work(i.e. to read again and comprehend precisely) is both imperative and necessary to serious academic research and criticism.
