Title: Prospective trial of self-expandable stent and/or Iodine-125 seeds on late stage esophageal cancer
Abstract: Objective To investigate the role of self-expandable stent and/or Iodine-125 seeds on late stage esophageal cancer. Methods Thirty-seven patients with T3 or T4 unresectable esophageal cancer were allocated into two groups. The patients of group A were implanted a covered self-expandable metal stent and of group B were implanted a self-expandable metal stent and Iodine-125 seeds. After installation of stent comparison of the rates of successful stent installation, complications and survival between these two groups were done. Results Successful stent installation was achieved in 37/37 patients( 100% ) . Average dyspha-gia score decreased respectively from 3. 3 to 1 in two groups. The complications of massive hematemesis and stent migration in two groups were 10.5% and 11. 1% respectively with no statistical significance (P 0. 05). The mean survival time in Iodine-125 stent group was 10. 5 months prominently longer than those in group A 4. 4 months (P 0. 001) . Conclusion Iodine-125 stent not only improved the dysphagia of unresectable esophageal cancer but also exerted brachytherapy, therefore, prolonged obviously the surviving time of patient.
