Title: On the Metaphorical Motivation of the Semantics of Idioms
Abstract: Experientialists hold the view that language was derived from the bodily experience of the human kind, and that metaphorical mapping helped words acquire their new meanings. With its analysis based on cognitive linguistic theories and an empirical approach, this paper investigates the semantics of idioms with the word face, in an attempt to prove that most idioms, like other lexical items, acquired their abstract meanings through metaphorical mapping, and that metaphors in idioms from different languages share noteworthy universal features.
