Title: Sildenafil versus prostaglandin E_1 in the management of erectile dysfunction
Abstract: Purpose:To evaluate the outcome of the treatment in the patients with erectile dysfunction(ED) using oral sildenafil or intracavernosal injection of prostaglandin E 1 (PGE 1).Methods:Fifty-four men with erectile dysfunction were randomly classified into two groups which were treated respectively by the oral sildenafil or intracavernosal injection of PGE 1 for 4~9 months with a average 6 months. Results:The percentages of the treatment efficacy in the two group were 80.0% and 83.3% respectively. There was not statistical difference between group A and group B (P 0.05). Among six patients who did not respond to sildenafil in group A,two achieved erections sufficient for sexual intercourse when these six patients received intracavernous injection of PGE 1.None of four patients who did not respond to intracavernous injection of PGE 1 in group B achieved erection sufficient for sexual intercourse when they received oral sildenafil. Conclusions:Both oral sildenafil and intracavernous injection of PGE 1 were effective for patients with erectile dysfunction of various etiologies. The patients who did not respond to sildenafil could receive PGE 1 intracavernous injection therapy which might probably produce satisfactory results.
