Title: Effect of MgSO_4 on the Expression of Fos Protein in the Dentate Gyrus of Hippocampus of Rats with Irradiation-Induced Brain Injuries
Abstract: Objective To explore the neuroprotective effect of magnesium sulfate(MgSO4) on irradiation induced acute brain injury. Methods A total of 18 mature Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into groups:the blank control group, experimental control group and therapy group. The whole brains of SD rats in the experimental control group and therapy group was exposed to the single vertical irradiation at a dose of 20 Gy using 5 MeV electrons electrons. Fos protein in the dentate gyrus (DG) of hippocampus was detected at 2 h after irradiation. 10% MgSO4 (400 mg/kg) was slowly administrated by intraperitoneal injection to the animals in the therapy group at different time, i.e: 1 day before irradia- tion, 30 minutes before irradiation and immediately after irradiation. Results Compared with the blank controlled group, the number of Fos-positive cells in the DG of hippocampus after whole-brain irradia- tion was increased significantly(P0.01), which was blocked significantly by MgSO4 early administration. Conclusion Early treatment with MgSO4 can inhibit the expression of Fos protein induced by irradia- tion in DG of hippocampus of rats, which indicates that MgSO4 can alleviate irradiation-induced brain injury through decreasing the expression of Fos protein.
