Title: Body and Gender Studies: A Start from Beauvoir and Butler's Discussion of the Body
Abstract: This paper reviews the discussions of the body by two important scholars in feminist theory: Simone de Beauvoir and Judith Butler. The former regards that sex is a result of social construct and it thus changes. She,however, refuses to envision women's liberation beyond women's body.Butler,on the other hand, criticizes Beauvoir's view of body as a passive and fixed entity and stresses that body is a result of cultural construct and therefore has an indispensable material base.Butler reflects upon Beauvoir's theory and raised the theory of performance of gender, pointing out that body, gender and desire are not in harmony by nature but a false impression of harmony as a result of regularization of heterosexuality. This paper reflects on the influence of the perspectives of the two theorists and develops a relationship between feminism and the queer theory on the concern, debates and progress of studies of body and gender.
