A brief history of the OECD is provided. We then focus on the enhanced importance of education within the Organisation, emphasizing the success of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This growing influence of PISA since 2000 has cemented the place of education within the OECD and has enhanced the OECD's role in education globally. Next, we document and analyze the expanding scope, scale, and explanatory power of PISA and related programs, including PISA Tests for Schools, PISA for Development, and the Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The assessment data and other statistics generated by the OECD have become significant in education governance globally. We argue that this has enabled the OECD to exert influence through new epistemological and infrastructural modes of global governance.
