No changes took place in the duration of C or in the phases of the mitotic cycle as the lateral root emerged from the primary root, though the proportion of proliferating cells increased and the quiescent fraction of cells decreased. It is suggested that the low frequency with which newly emerged lateral roots label with 3H-TdR is a result of the formation of a large endogenous pool of TdR in the meristems during the period they are temporarily quiescent. The changes which took place in the parameters of cell proliferation during the early growth of the lateral root have been correlated with those in root apical meristems following the onset of seed germination.Read More
