Title: On numerical methods for direct and inverse convection-diffusion problems
Abstract: De thesis bestaat uit 3 delen. In het eerste deel komen oplossingsmethoden van “directe” of “voorwaartse” randwaardeproblemen aan bod. In hoofdstuk 2 wordt een niet-lineair convectie-diffusievraagstuk beschouwd. Dit vraagstuk modeleert de verspreiding van contaminanten in de ondergrond ten gevolge van een doublettest. Dit is een meettechniek waarin twee bronnen geboord worden. De ene bron wordt gebruikt om water in de ondergrond te pompen, via de andere wordt dezelfde hoeveelheid water terug opgepompt. Het doel is om karakterestieken van de ondergrond te bepalen. We tonen aan hoe dit voorwaartse vraagstuk efficient en accuraat kan opgelost worden. Eerst tonen we aan hoe het probleem kan getransformeerd worden tot een formulering over een rechthoekig domein. Daarna gebruiken we operatorsplitsing. Hierbij worden transport en diffusie van elkaar gesplitst. We gebruiken een Riemann oplossingstechniek voor het transportge-deelte, en een eindige volume methode gecombineerd met een relaxatiemethode voor de diffusie. We bewijzen dat de techniek van operatorsplitsing over een begrensd domein met randcondities, convergeert naar de zwakke variationele oplossing van het originele probleem. In hoofdstuk 3 beschouwen we diffusie-annealing, de techniek waarbij staal kan verrijkt worden met silicium via “hot dipping” en uitgloeiing, een techniek waarop Prof. Houbaert van LabMet (UGent) een patent heeft verworven. Eerst stellen we het wiskundige model op om dit probleem te beschrijven. Vervolgens reduceren we het probleem naar een een-dimensionaal niet-lineair diffusie-vraagstuk. Dit probleem lossen we op via de methode der lijnen, waarbij we in het geval van een bewegend inter-actievlak aantonen hoe het gebruik van Landau's transfor-matie toelaat de ongekende tijdsafhankelijke positie van dit interactievlak te bepalen. In deel 2 komen inverse problemen aan bod. Hoofdstuk 4 is gewijd aan het bepalen van de niet-lineaire diffusiecoefficient vertrekkende van experimentele metingen. Dit gebeurt aan de hand van het opstellen van een duaal probleem. We tonen aan hoe dit duaal probleem moet geconstrueerd worden, welke oplossings-methode geschikt is, en bewijzen de convergentie van de numerieke oplossing in gepaste functieruimten. Hoofdstuk 5 is gewijd aan het bepalen van de karakterstieken van de ondergrond via de metingen van het doublet-experiment. Ook hier wordt een duaal probleem opgesteld dat niet van het standaardtype blijkt te zijn. Niettemin worden zeer goede numerieke resultaten bekomen. In Deel 3 komt een grondwaterstromingsprobleem aan bod: Toth's regionaal stromingsprobleem, dat in de hydrogeologische literatuur een belangrijke rol speelt. We stellen eerst een semi-analytische oplossing op. Verder tonen we aan hoe het probleem ook via een eindige elementenmethode kan opgelost worden alsook, in sommige gevallen, via een oneindige elementenmethode.
