Title: Using International and Foreign Human Rights Law in Public Interest Advocacy
Abstract: It is a joy and a privilege for me to be here with you allfriends and colleagues of very long standing and new (dare I say "younger"?)colleagues with whom I look forward to forming lifelong friendships.**[Much of the depressing material that we have been discussing has to do not with substance, but with procedurewho can gain access to the courts or legislatures, what statutory or regulatory language will be held to be enforceable at the instance of private plaintiffs, etc.***Although this is not what I am going to discuss, I do want to underscore that access to the courts and legislatures is crucial.I never understand why so-called conservatives want to keep people out of these institutions, for when aggrieved people do not have such access, they are more likely to express their grievances in other ways, often including violence.
