Title: Smart Software for Complex Space Mission Data Systems at the European Space Agency
Abstract: In recent years the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) has adopted special concepts and techniques to respond to the need of reducing cost and risk in the development and operation of ground segment software. The concept of mission family is the base for preparing cost-effective Operational Simulators for testing and training and Mission Control Systems for monitoring and control the spacecraft. This concept is complemented by exploiting reusable software (Infrastructure Software) and applying the delta approach. Finally, since families of missions have lifetimes much longer than the individual missions, the challenges of dealing with the evolution of ground segment software and associated hardware platforms typically over ten or more years must be met.
