Title: Comparative performance of large eddy simulation on SIMD and MIMD massively parallel computers
Abstract: Massively parallel processing can be used to achieve the computat ional efficiency necessary for operational mesoscale weat her forecasting with highly resolved computational meshes. A simple numerical weather prediction model problem, the large eddy simulation of the decay of isotropic turbulence in a stably-stratified fluid, was implemented on two different parallel computers, the lntel iPSCl860 and Thinking Machine's CM-5, and time-dependent calculations were performed on each machine with a variety of numerical grid sizes and act ive computer processors. The calculations were also compared to similar ones made on a Cray Y-MP.
