Title: Experience with intravascular embolization in patients with oral cancer
Abstract: Hemostasis was attempted by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in patients with malignant oral tumors for whom radical therapy was difficult. The procedure was done by our hospital's radiology department. This study showed that when pseudoaneurysms or culprit vessels could be identified by angiography, satisfactory hemostasis was achieved with the use of a permanent embolization agent. However, when the tumor was rich in feeding vessels and peripheral vessels involved in bleeding could not be identified, a temporary embolization agent was injected. This procedure failed to achieve satisfactory hemostasis. Nonetheless, as compared with surgical ligation, TAE is much less invasive, and the temporary achievement of hemostasis is clinically significant.
