Title: A Novel Approach to Standardize Nationwide Orthognathic Surgery Data
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: To our knowledge, we pioneer the first regional secure on-line Orthognathic Database system within the UK National Health Service. Our database has the potential capacity for nationwide implementation to collect data for audit, research and to standardise all aspects of Orthodontic-Surgical Care. MATERIALS: We custom devised a ‘dataset’ to measure clinically pertinent parameters representing a continuum in care from the first pre-orthodontic to final post-operative visit. Our parameters were set prior to those of the National Facial and Oral Research Centre (NFORC) being published, however, some similarity exists. Vantage Diagnostics incorporated our dataset into an electronic software package designated the ‘Sirona’ Orthognathic Database. At any point in time, data can be easily input or retrieved securely from Sirona by clinicians at multiple sites via the NHS ‘Spine’ server. RESULTS: We will demonstrate live the functionality and versatility of the Sirona Orthognathic Database. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Sirona allows clinicians to share their experience in terms of diagnosis, reasons for treatment, clinical measurements, surgery performed, and surgical outcomes at various stages of management. Undoubtedly, Sirona has the potential to generate many audits of Orthodontic-Surgical treatment outcomes, which is now a key requirement for commissioning of clinical services and research.
