The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of an obstetrics–gynecology workshop to improve proficiency and confidence immediately before residency. METHODS: A skills workshop was conducted in the spring of 2013 for all fourth-year medical students accepted into obstetrics–gynecology residency. The students learned the following procedures: 1) square knot-tying; 2) delivery of a fetus in the occiput anterior position using a delivery model; 3) performance of amniotic fluid index on an ultrasound simulator; 4) laparoscopic port placement with a laparoscopic simulator; and 5) treatment of a wound infection on a model. We evaluated students for performance and knowledge-based competency before and after an interactive tutorial with a teaching physician. Each student completed a pre- and post-workshop self-assessment measuring confidence in each skill. RESULTS: Nine participants provided pre- and postworkshop data. The mean scores for delivery of a fetus in the position, amniotic fluid index performance, placement of a laparoscopic port, and treatment of a wound infection improved significantly after participation in the workshop (all P<.05). Square knot-tying was not significantly improved (P=.195). Knowledge-based competency (scores on the multiple choice examination) also increased after the interactive teaching session (P=.003). Students' self-assessed confidence increased in each category with the exception of knot-tying (P=.347) and treatment of a wound infection (P=.447). CONCLUSIONS: Integration of a workshop for fourth-year medical students may improve students' competence and confidence before beginning residency.Read More
