Title: Sham procedures that improve blinding to active transcranial direct current stimulation
Abstract: Investigations traditionally use brief (30-60 sec) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a sham procedure because it induces cutaneous sensations that resemble those produced by longer (10-20 min) periods of stimulation. However, O'Connell et al. (2012) questioned the effectiveness of this procedure as current intensity approaches 2 mA. We compared the effectiveness of blinding by traditional sham procedures as well as a novel sham procedure to 20 minutes of active 2.0 mA stimulation.
