Title: Development and implementation of the first set of flow-diagnostic techniques for cryogenic wind tunnels
Abstract: Since 1989, the author led the development and implementation of the first set of flow diagnostic techniques for the cryogenic wind tunnels at NASA Langley Research Center. This set includes infrared imaging for global boundary-layer transition, deposited hot films for local / temporal measurement of the boundarylayer instability, and focusing schlieren for large fieldof-view flow visualization. This triad provides a complete picture of the flow around a configuration of interest, at Mach and Reynolds numbers combinations matching the values encountered in flight.
