In this paper, we consider the 3D salt body reconstruction problem using a variational formulation of shape optimization. We study the shape functional using the Helmholtz equation and shape derivative to calculate the gradient descent direction for surface boundary deformation. The level set method is employed to represent domains and their boundaries and the dynamic evolution of shape changes. The performance of the approach is demonstrated by a 3D numerical experiment.
