Title: The Preparation of Fine Ammonium Perchlorate by the Spray-drying Method. The Effect of Organic Solvents on the Particle Shape and Size.
Abstract: Fine sphere ammonium perchlorate (AP) is necessary in order to manufacture a propellant with a higher burning rate. In order to prepare smaller droplets by splitting a sprayed droplet vigorously in the drying process of the spray-drying method, a high vapor pressure organic solvent saturated with AP was dissolved in the AP solution, and the solution was spray-dried. Acetone, methanol and ethanol were used in this work. Fine sphere AP is prepared when the range of methanol concentration is 70-100vol% and the range of ethanol concentration is 15-85vol%. However when acetone is used, fine sphere AP is not prepared. The mean diameter of fine sphere AP decreases with increase in the concentration of organic solvent and the inlet temperature of drying air, but the mean diameter converges in the range of 1.3-2.2×10-6m. When methanol concentration is 100vol% and the inlet temperature is above 313K, the finest sphere AP is prepared in this work.
