Title: Whittier Access Project: Conversion of Existing 4 km (2.5 Mile) Long Railroad Tunnel to a Dual-Use Single-Lane Highway/Railroad Facility
Abstract: The Whittier Access Project is the 8.4 km (5.2 mile) extension of the Portage Glacier Highway to Whittier Alaska. This project provides the first highway access to the port community of Whittier, Alaska—a vital cargo port, recreation area, and tourist destination located on magnificent Prince William Sound. This paper gives an overview of the history of the project, alternatives considered, and some of the challenges successfully conquered during the construction. The harsh environmental conditions at this location required an innovative design to provide a facility that would meet the needs of the public.
