Title: Competency Assessment In Point-of-Care Testing
Abstract: Competencies in the point-of-care testing setting can be performed a number of different ways. The biggest hurdle facing point-of-care coordinators is to get the competency completed and documented. Designing a comprehensive program that will address preanalytical, analytical, and postanalytical components is the second hurdle. Accrediting bodies suggest ways in which to achieve competence. Direct observation of test performance, review of test results and quality control, and analysis of previously tested specimens are just a few. This article will give insight and suggestions on how to achieve competence by determining who and what needs to be assessed, explores methods and measurements for achieving competence, and provides tools for the documentation of competencies.
