Title: The Persistence of Extended Family Residence in Japan: Anachronism or Alternative Strategy?
Abstract: Reasons for the continuing popularity of extended family residence in Japan are explored. Such family patterns involve different generations of a family living together in one household. The authors suggest that far from being a relic of past practice extended family residence is actively preferred by many families because of the associated benefits such as child care and shared housework.
