Abstract: The use of best management practices (BMPs) in an urban watershed can provide adequate degrees of treatment at a relatively low cost. BMPs can range from being management operations (such as street sweeping or reducing the amount of pesticides used on urban lawns) to structural treatment options (the four most common alternatives being detention/retention ponds, swales, filter/buffer strips and constructed wetlands). This paper focuses on structural BMPs and overviews the state of the knowledge, the unknowns, and research programs being undertaken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other key organizations to address the unknowns.
