Title: A Woman at Prayer (Psalm 131,2b) and Arguments »from Parallelism«
Abstract: M.D. Knowles’s recent re-pointing of עלי to עלי in Ps 131,2bα on the basis of the half-line parallelism with Ps 131,2bβ may also affect the first instance of כגמל in that verse: perhaps it, too, should be re-pointed with the article as per the second instance of כגמל. Closer attention to the phenomenon of parallelism, however – both generally and in this particular verse – indicates that it cannot be used to decide the matter. Hence, arguments »from parallelism « must be used with extreme caution. While both readings remain possible and justifiable by means of parallelism, the present study nevertheless favors (building on Knowles) the following translation of v. 2bα: »Like the weaned child on me, its mother«.
