Validation studies of aerodynamics, surface heat transfer and pressure distribution, and flow field characteristics of high angle of attack flows over conical bodies at hypersonic speeds were considered. Herein, the angle of attack (α) was considered to be high when it was greater than the cone’s half cone angle (θc). In general, there was good agreement between the CFD prediction and the experimental data. In a particularly interesting finding, it was found that there was a noticeable change in the trend of the pitching moment at about 60o of angle of attack for a 9o cone due to the significant communication of the flow between the base region and the cone surface region.Read More
