Miill., G. cribrosa Hedw. (Coscinodon cribrosus (Hedw.) Spruce), G. donniana Sm., and G. torquata Hornsch. are reported new to Mexico. Grimmia mexicana H. C. Greven, sp. nov. is described. From the beginning of the 19th century, the Mexican volcanoes Nevado de Toluca, Iztaccfhuatl, Popocat6petl, and Pico de Orizaba were explored by bryologists, resulting in the description of various 'endemic' bryophytes. However up to the nineties, the Mexican bryoflora was still insufficiently known and Delgadillo (1982) stated: 'It is evident that we require considerably more research to complete floristic lists and understand the geographical relations of the Mexican moss flora'. The publication of the Moss Flora of Mexico (Sharp et al. 1994) was an important step forward, however, detailed study of the herbarium specimens and fieldwork shows that even nowadays important new bryological information can be obtained. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study is based primarily on herbarium specimens deposited in BM, MICH, NY, and PC. Material from MEXU could not be studied because it was under revision by the curator. In December, 1997, a collecting trip to the central Mexican volcanoes was made. During this trip, 88 Grimmia specimens were collected from Nevado de Toluca, Pico de Orizaba, and Iztaccfhuatl. Unless otherwise stated, the collections are in the herbarium of the author, with a selection of specimens sent to BM and MEXU. COMMENTS ON THE MOSS FLORA OF MEXICO In The Moss Flora of Mexico (Sharp et al. 1994), the Grimmiales are treated by Howard Crum. In this work, he recognized G. affinis Hornsch., G. anodon B.S.G., G. apocarpa Hedw., G. arizoniae Ren. & Card., G. churchilliana Crum, G. elongata Sturm, G. fusco-lutea Hook., G. laevigata (Brid.) Brid, G. moxleyi Holz., G. orbicularis Wils., G. ovalis (Hedw.) Lindb., G. pilifera P. Beauv., G. pulla Card., G. pulvinata (Hedw.) Sm. & Sowerb., G. rivularis Brid., G. schiedeana C. MUill., G. tenerrima Ren. & Card., G. tergestina B.S.G., G. tolucensis Card., G. trichophylla Grev., and G. wrightii (Sull.) Aust. With the exception of G. schiedeana and G. tergestina, all of these species were illustrated, although information about the specimens drawn was not included. There is also no list ofRead More
