Title: ECONOMIC PRESSURE AND THE DETERIORATION OF RESEARCH ETHICS.
Abstract: Almost no day goes by without news about unethical, misbehaving managers, sportsmen, or politicians that sought personal advantages by exploiting third parties through breaking explicit and implicit rules. Along with others we suggest that such defective behavior is fueled by winners-take-all contexts and low probability of being disclosed and sanctioned. Focusing on costs and benefits of honesty versus misconduct we elaborate whether these conditions apply within academia, too. Based on an economically-based behavioral model we develop propositions that allow for future tests and outline promising avenues for research and academic practice.
