Abstract: Twelve children with achalasia were treated by the technique of balloon dilatation in the years 1984-1991. Follow-up from 2 to 8 years (mean 3.5 years) showed complete relief of obstruction in 10 patients, while two required esophagomyotomy. Balloon dilatation is effective in the treatment of achalasia.
