Title: From Greenfield Development to Brownfield Redevelopment
Abstract: Since the 1990s, redevelopment of obsolete industrial sites, or brownfields, has become a new challenge for urban planning. Unfortunately, planners did not adjust their planning methods to the needs of brownfields, but derived planning instruments, strategies and procedures from development of virgin sites, or greenfields. Based on an investigation of Swiss and German case studies, this paper outlines the physical and non-physical characteristics of brownfields affecting the planning process and planning strategies. Special emphasize is laid on planning law and the role of the public sector. Recommendations for future brownfield redevelopments are presented.
