Abstract: Summary The Committee on National Statistics, a standing committee of the National Academy of SciencesNational Research Council, seeks to contribute to a better understanding of important national issues in the United States by working to improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based. Through various panels, workshops, meetings and other activities, the Committee influences both the content and the form of government statistics and it stimulates work on important areas of methodological research in the academic community. This paper describes the structure and functioning of the Committee, its formation and development, and its role in fostering the interaction between those in academia and those in government. The paper ends with some reflections upon the elements essential for its past and continued success.
