The chromosomes at metaphase I did not organise themselves at the equatorial region and were seen to lie scattered in groups of varying numbers. Pollen mother cells with chromosomes in one or two groups during anaphase II were also encountered. The overall picture of the meiotic irregularities indicates complete or partial failure of spindle mechanism. As the abnormalities were from those buds which appeared late in the season during January-February (17–18° C), it has been suggested that these may have been caused by a sharp fall in temperature during this period. Buds studied during the normal flowering season in May-October (35–38° C) did not exhibit any such meiotic irregularity.Read More
