Abstract: A simple and rapid method is described for obtaining qualitative information about the kinetic energies of fragment ions. Semi-quantitative information can be obtained by calibrating with ions of known energy distribution. Systematic investigations on some light hydrocarbons (paraffins and mono-olefins) show a marked dependence of relative abundance on kinetic energy in the sense that normally a more abundant fragment ion has less kinetic energy and vice versa.
