Title: Do BITs ‘Work’? Empirical Evidence from France
Abstract: In this article, I provide an empirical (statistical) examination of the relationship between bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, focusing on the French case. I examine whether countries that have BITs with France tend to receive greater shares of French outward FDI. My analysis finds no significant linkage between French BITs and FDI. I also use the analysis to provide a discussion of some of the important challenges of empirical research on the BITs/FDI question.
