Title: Reforms in Teaching-Learning Environment towards Greater Interactivity - New Roles of Facilitators and Learners
Abstract: Quality in education is what makes learning a pleasure and a joy. Joy in learning is ever changing. What is thrilling at one age is infantile at another. Teachers must be ever alert to engage the students in a discussion of what constitutes a quality experience. The negotiations and discussions are never done. It takes constant engagement to make a student to learning. The main objective of the teacher is to put quality into education.A vision for education must look ahead, to the time when the education will be put to use, and consider the threats and opportunities those being educated will face. The choice of what to include under the headings of knowledge, know-how, wisdom and character, will depend upon this vision of the future. An student-centered, learning-oriented classroom requires different perspectives from both instructors and students. Changes are being called for in the way we think about the role of both instructor and student. The goal of instruction becomes the intentional intellectual development of students instead of covering content. Teaching standards and curricula needs immediate revision. Basic reforms are required to be made in our education system as we lack standardization in this field also. There is a need to change the curriculum urgently. The discipline-oriented learning has to be replaced by interdisciplinary courses that are career oriented gradually. The curriculum must aim at giving field based learning experiences for students and must respond to the local needs for human resource in specific work-related opportunities. We have now an information society rather than a knowledge society. It is one of the key functions of educational institutions to convert information into knowledge. Values need to be brought back into the education process, without which education lacks substance and direction. Focus of the Universities should shift from creating the best syllabus to the most effective syllabus. Learners acquire knowledge passively but construct it actively based on their experiences. This involves the use of active learning strategies such as group work, discussion, case studies, problem-based learning, and the like There is again a greater need to develop the right faculties for imparting quality education. Staff must engage themselves in ongoing professional development and continuous learning activities. Teachers need to foster positive teacher-student and student-student relationships through the use of cooperative learning strategies.Within both the distance education and general education framework, new standards are being defined based on a student-centered curriculum, increased interactive learning, integration of technology into the educational system, and collaborative study activities.
