Abstract: The Tasmanian Aboriginal extinction myth that flourished with the death of Truganini in 1876 was no simple historical falsification. It was a potent piece of propaganda used by Tasmanian settlers to pronounce the violent and terrifying era of dispossession over. It was also instrumental in suppressing and denying the right to Aboriginal heritage of those society labelled 'half castes', 'quarter castes' and 'hybrids'.
