Bosse published two treatises on printmaking in, respectively, 1645 and 1649. In the first treatise, he brought to light the technical “secrets” of etching and engraving that, until then, had been taught only by masters to apprentices. In the second, which dealt with the arts of “design” covered in Renaissance books of criticism and theory, he treated printmaking as the equal of drawing and painting. His ambitious theory of printmaking represented an early effort to elevate the status of printmaking while securing a place for it alongside drawing and painting in an integrated theory of the arts of “design.”Read More
