Title: Relationships between mesoscale oceanographic structures and zooplankton communities in the bay of biscay
Abstract: El objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar los factores que determinan la distribucion y productividad del zooplancton en primavera en el Golfo de Vizcaya (desde 43.32oN a 46.12oN y desde 1.21oW a 4.81oW).
Se analizaron las muestras de zooplancton de un transecto que cruzaba la plataforma continental en frente de la desembocadura del estuario de la Gironde (anos 1995,1997,1999,2001 y 2003) con el objeto de describir variaciones interanuales e investigar los efectos que ejercen sobre la comunidad de zooplancton las dos estructuras de mesoescala permanentes en la plataforma continental del Golfo de Vizcaya: la pluma de la Gironde y el frente de talud.
Del ano 2004, se analizaron muestras cubriendo la totalidad del area estudiada para presentar una vista quasi-sinoptica de las estructuras oceanograficas de mesoescala y las comunidades del zooplancton en el Golfo de Vizcaya. Se describieron las relaciones entre las abundancias de los taxones del zooplancton y una seleccion de variables ambientales (temperatura y salinidad dela superficie del mar junto al a estratificacion de la columna de agua y el patron de fluorescencia).
Aparte de esto, se combino un muestreo mensual en una estacion fija (Desde Abril de 2003 a Abril de 2004) con un muestreo espacial de alta resolucion cubriendo un area del mar Cantabrico en Mayo de 2003 para investigar en que medida los patrones de distribucion hallados se podian atribuir a un crecimiento promovido in situ o a otros mecanismos como la acumulacion pasiva. El estudio combina los datos de distribucion espacial con la determinacion de un indice cuantitativo de reproduccion para estimar el crecimiento de Calanus helgolandicus y Calanoides carinatus. Paralelamente se testo el efecto del parasitismo por Ellobiopsis sp.sobre la fecundidad de las dos especies.
