Title: Das Leben und Wirken des Journalisten Moriz Szeps (1834 - 1902)
Abstract: Die vorliegende Masterarbeit widmet sich dem judischen Journalisten Moriz Szeps (1834-1902), welcher im Jahre 1854 aus Galizien nach Wien kam und innerhalb einiger Jahre zu einem der machtigsten und einflussreichsten Wiener Journalisten wurde. Anfangs bei der volkstumlichen „Morgen-Post“ als Chefredakteur angestellt, revoltierte er 1867 gegen den Eigentumer des Volksblattes und grundete 1867 mit Arbeitskollegen das „Neue Wiener Tagblatt“, welches zeitweise die meistgelesene Zeitung Wiens war. Moriz Szeps war ein liberaler, antiklerikaler und progressiver Journalist, welcher aufgrund seiner Artikel des Ofteren in Konflikt mit Vertretern der osterreichischen Regierung geriet. Er war ein guter Freund und Vertrauter des Kronprinzen Rudolfs, dessen Artikel er in seiner Zeitung drucken lies und mit dem er bis zu Rudolfs Selbstmord im Jahre 1889 in Briefkontakt stand. 1886 verlies Moriz Szeps nach Zwistigkeiten mit der Aktiengesellschaft „Steyrermuhl“ das „Neue Wiener Tagblatt“ und grundete das „Wiener Tagblatt“, welches allerdings in der Presselandschaft Wiens nie richtig Fus fassen konnte. Moriz Szeps war Mitbegrunder des Journalisten- und Schriftstellervereins „Concordia“. Er forderte zeitlebens Kunstler und Wissenschaftler und in seinem Palais in der Liechtensteinstrase fand sich die kulturelle und intellektuelle Elite Wiens ein. Seine Ehefrau Amalia unterhielt dort einen Salon, welcher sich groser Beliebtheit erfreute. Moriz Szeps verfugte uber zahlreiche internationale Kontakte und Beziehungen, besonders zum republikanischen Frankreich. Moriz Szeps forderte eine politische und kulturelle Annaherung Osterreich- Ungarns an Frankreich und sah in der zu starken Anlehnung Osterreichs an das Deutsche Kaiserreich eine Gefahr fur die Habsburgermonarchie. Neben den Konflikten mit den osterreichischen Behorden, hatte Moriz Szeps mit dem starker werdenden Antisemitismus im 19. Jahrhundert in Wien zu kampfen. Der deutschnationale und antisemitische Politiker Georg von Schonerer strebte im Jahr 1884 einen Ehrenbeleidigungsprozess gegen Moriz Szeps an, in welchem Moriz Szeps zu vierzehn Tagen Haft verurteilt wurde. Moriz Szeps unterstutzte zeitlebens die Armen und grundete im Jahre 1900 die popularwissenschaftliche Wochenzeitschrift „Das Wissen fur Alle“, welche sich der Volksbildung verschrieben hatte. Moriz Szeps war einer der bedeutendsten Wiener Personlichkeiten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Neben seiner journalistischen Tatigkeit, sind vor allem seine Bemuhungen zur Bewahrung des Wienerwaldes und zur Errichtung der ersten Hochquellwasserleitung Wiens zu betonen. Auch sein Kampf gegen den Antisemitismus Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Wien ist zu wurdigen, wenngleich dieser als vergebens betrachtet werden kann. Moriz Szeps verstarb im Jahr 1902 verarmt in Wien.
