Title: Panchagram: a cooperative community development.
Abstract: A rural community organization, the Shamabay, was established in Panchagram (Bangladesh) in 1975. Economic and social groups are represented in its 12 member Executive Committee. The Shamabay combines the functions of the village government and rural development cooperatives. With the leadership of the Shamabay, Panchagram, formerly a poor peasant community has become a rural development success story. Primary education is now universally available and secondary, technical and community education programs have been established as well. Agricultural yields have increased through technological development, and unemployment has disappeared. Sanitation was improved through installation of sanitary latrines in all households and public places, with the poorest households being served first. The poorest 1/3 of households have been electrified. Infant mortality has fallen to less than 4% and family planning has been introduced and is gaining acceptance.
