Title: Survey of Emerging Nonvolatile Embedded Memory Technologies
Abstract: Embeddable nonvolatile memory (NVM) could play an important part in the success of System-on-Chip (SoC) technology. Flash memory, which is presently the dominant NVM type, is available as an option for standard CMOS processes; however, flash memory has undesirable properties for potential SoC application including a relatively slow write time, limited write cycle endurance, and the requirement for high-voltage supplies and transistors. This article briefly surveys three emerging NVM technologies —ferroelectric memory (FeRAM), magnetoresistive memory (MRAM), and ovonic unified memory (OUM)—that could potentially replace flash memory, and possibly also much of the volatile memory, in future SoC designs.
