Abstract: It has long been the dream of leaders in Australia with responsibility for the Northern Territory to have constructed a railway between Adelaide and Darwin. Debates in the South Australian Parliament last century make reference to the project, in order to open up a new trade route for that State with Asia. With the Commonwealth assuming responsibility for the Northern Territory from South Australia in 1911, the focus of power shifted east. This paper canvasses the history of the project, particularly since 1978 when Self Government was granted to the Northern Territory, and provides an outline of the economic arguments that have been canvassed in relation to the project in the last fifteen years. The railway as a regional development tool will be pivotal in increasing trade between Australia and Asia, together with trade from southern Australia into the economically dynamic region of northern Australia from the Kimberley to Carpentaria.
