Abstract: This special issue contains 13 papers addressing various historical aspects of national identity, nationalism, and political problems in Eastern Europe and former states of the USSR. Topics covered include the following: election of ethnicity and its role in cultural identity; cognition, consciousness, and nationalism; perceptions and projections of nationalist revival; national consciousness in Medieval Poland; historical development of nationalism in Poland; development of nationalism in the Ukraine since 1600; aristocratic crisis and the emergence of national identity in Russia; a conceptual view of Modern Czech national consciousness; the Uniate Church and nationality in Central Europe; and the growth of national identities amongst the south Slavs. -N.Davey
