Title: Eliciting Functional Requirements for an Aged Care & Rehabilitation e-Referral System Using the Locales Framework
Abstract: Melbourne Health in collaboration with i-Health is developing a new web-based referral, assessment and transfer system - the e-Referral System - that aims to improve the way that patients requiring Aged Care and Rehabilitation Care are managed across the acute to sub-acute continuum. The healthcare working environment presents significant challenges to system designers due in part to the informal nature of many clinical processes and the complex interactions that occur between large numbers of stakeholders. Requirements definition methodologies that are cognisant of the needs of busy clinicians, such that they can be optimally involved within the specification process, are essential in clinical software development. This paper describes how we applied the Locales Framework in understanding the e-Referral problem space and discusses how it informed and augmented the design process. We provide examples of how we applied the Framework. We found that the Locales Framework is a useful tool for understanding and designing for cooperative work.
