Title: Chronic diarrhea and parasitosis in adult patients suspected to have AIDS in Ivory Coast
Abstract: 134 men and 14 women suffering from chronic diarrhea and suspected of infection with HIV had stool examinations at the University Hospital in Treichville or the parasitology laboratory of the University Hospital in Cocody Ivory Coast. 46 cases were negative for all intestinal parasites. 57 had protozoa including 24 with Isospora belli and 10 with Cryptosporidium sp. All but 5 cases of Isospora and all of Cryptosporidium were associated with other parasites. All types of intestinal flagella were identified with 9 cases of Trichomonas intestinalis and 6 of Giardia. Amoeba were detected in 22 cases with the majority nonpathogenic. Entamoeba coli was found in 13 cases. 2 patients had amoebic dysentery 1 due exclusively to Entamoeba histolytica histolytica and 1 in association with Isospora Candida albicans and Schistosoma mansoni. 45 patients had helminths with Necator americanus found in 21 cases and Strongyloides stercoralis in 18. Yeasts were found much more rarely. Candida albicans was the only agent found in 20 cases. In this tropical environment where many parasites are common Isospora belli Cryptosporidium sp. and Candida albicans are frequent opportunistic infections afflicting the HIV positive.
